DJ Adam Ficek

Just back from Malta, played a solo show and a blinder of a DJ set. One of those sets where everything flowed.
I never realised the Island was so buzzing. I’m back in the new year definately.

Am now ploughing through emails and doing grown up stuff, although it’s all being eased by listening to ‘The heartbreaks’ – Hopefully I’ll be having a ‘Ficek’ edit on o my favourite tracks of theirs. I think they’re on tour with Carl Barat at the mo so go check them and him out, both got hot hits doing the rounds.

So..London Guns (Gary and myself) has begun, we played a stormer of a set at Gatecrasher Birmingham a few nights ago, blazed it, the show is a kind of mix of too many DJ’s and people who whack things. It’s only just started but we’re getting all the hipsters real excited
more of LG as it grows, but get yerselves joined up here.

Another recent outing was helping a friend out for a student do in Belgium, I was booked for the old ‘Electrindie’ but it swayed towards an Annie Mac style thing.
Whilst I’m on that subject, does anyone know any of that crew? I want to play those things her controllers organise but she always blanks me on twitter.
I played with her once and introduced her as ‘Annie Big Mac’ that probably didn’t do me any favours, I blame Ogidan, he dared me to do it when we were slightly worse for wear. Well it was better than his other introductory idea….Excuse me, I’m waffling….sorry A

Watch this space for Adam Ficek’s ‘Electrindie’ in London.

Which reminds me I need to put up another new edit on my website!

RKC

So since I last spoke to y’all I’ve uploaded a few videos on youtube, it’s taken this long for the moons around Saturn to be in the correct lineage for Jupiter’s biorhythm to peak.
One is for ‘One born every minute’ the platinum selling single I released last June, to be honest it’s a gentle start to the campaign which will see the launch of my second album in Nov. You’ve probably all seen the link for the pre sale, I think these cheapos have all gone now but you might be lucky, so get on it skinflints.

The other vid is a new ditty I had swimming around my noggin.

As always with a pending release I’m plagued with the same old concerns, will some journo slag it off, will everybody know it’s out, Should I have changed that lyric….etc etc. Well last time around I think I took it all a little too seriously, this time I feel much more removed, well as much as you can be.

As I grow, with more experience, the bad reviews don’t hit me as hard, they’re still not very nice but it’s easier, (I might threaten to clump the odd journo, and there are still a few I’m hoping to bump into but that’s just my way of releasing some pent up aggression)

This time around there’s no budget for PR so all the press I get is by way of favours and good folk lending a hand. So when you see it spamming around do me a favour and respammit, and when the reviews come in keep it in mind that I’ve not scratched any backs, which may be a good or bad thing!
It’s a real achievement getting a record out in these wild times so I’m well chuffed, also as always a big thanks to everyone that’s been involved from the start of the roses plot. It amazes me that amongst all the slippery cretins in this industry there is still a dazzling positivity with the top bananas that help me, and kick me up the arse along the way. I’ll repay you all one one day. x

It is all too easy to get cynical in the music industry, and I must admit I have been dragged down in the past, these recent times have been a real eye opener for me, totally cleared the wheat from the chaff, obviously I have nothing to offer the takers any more, so all that’s left are the true lovers, what started out as a black, bleak time has actually made me see with such clarity. The ones standing ready to pick me up now do so from a position of true caring and concern not for a buck or an earner.
So if you’re a believer of what I do then hold tight, it’s gonna grow and grow.
It’s real, this is what I do, ‘career’ is a dirty word in the music industry, not for me.
If a career means dedicating everything to your art then I’m a careerist.

Anyhow, stick with me kids and we’ll go far, get behind the album on it’s release Nov 7th, my goal is generate enough cash to pay for the next one.
Keep it spammed on twitski, keep the facebook spam up, a spam a day keeps the doctor er…

And another thing, you better all come to the gigs!! UK. Germany, Italy (by the way if you know any promoters in your area/country then give them a shout if you want me to play) I’m currently sorting Sweden, France is proving sooo difficult, seems to be a lack of good promoters over there. Big shame!

….Actually whilst I remember, I always get you lot saying ‘why didn’t play here or there’ the reason is this. My agent will send out mass emails to all his contacts around the world, the promoters that want me will say ya, so it’s not down to me not wanting to play it’s to do with opportunities etc.

PS. There’s also some new demos up in the members area of my site, so sign up and I’ll sell your details to pharmaceutical companies and become a millionaire, not really.

So the RKC tour, here it is,

Just waiting on links

To conclude this roses bit, I’ve started work on the next album, I want the beats to be a little tougher, don’t get scared but I’m considering getting someone to have a bit of a hippety hop – rip rap over one of middle eights, it might just work. (wait until 2011)

Babyshambles

As I write this someone has tweeted asking for me to explain the whole Babyshambles thing, I will do but not now, I have to be careful as there’s a few bits n bobs being sorted as we speak, also as I have no control over who reads this, again – no comment –
Anyway…..positives, that was the past ya devils…

I’m hooking up with Pat next week to do some writing, I’ve sent him my new demos and he’s buzzing to play on them, as I’ve said on many occasion that man is a genius. Can’t wait to get his guitar on the tunes.

Adam Ficek Solo

I’m just sorting some solo dates in Dec, a kind of christmas tour, so if you could all bring me presents that would be very nice.
Unrelated to my music or performance but……I’m doing a few guest lectures across the globe, yes very grown up!
I do have a bit of a background in academia don’t you know.

what!!
you were in babyshambles!
rock n roll, take drugs, fight the police…
Camden, Leather jackets, smoking in photo shoots, birds n booze, rebel – don’t brush yer teeth, stay up late…slam the door, throw litter, use swear words…don’t brush your hair…pretend your from London…pretend your skint.

Cripes what was I thinking, to be honest, it’s a buzz telling the younguns exactly what to watch for and who to swerve or grasp.
I’ve seen quite a few things in this funny old game, I’m no old timer but I’ve probably dealt with every aspect of the industry in some form or another, it’s only now I’m starting to see some real chunky diamonds shining through.

I’ll post the lectures on the next blog, until then…..my final thought.

The music business is now totally consumer lead (or media lead) depending if you’re a monkey or not.
so…
You have the £££££, and the choice to buy or not to buy. Don’t be fooled by the big guys.

Japan

Japan and beyond

So I finally made it to Japan!

It’s always held an incredible air of mystique but unfortunatley we could never get there in Babyshambles land, but through a friend of a friend of a friend I met some amazing people who made it all happen. (big thanks to Miz, Akira, Tomo and the all the warming fans out there)

The adventure began with a long flight, I quite like long haul if it’s not some ungodly hour, we flew at midday-ish so all was well. The good thing about flying big hours is the amount of time I can spend doing production stuff and catching up on my ‘to do list’ which seems to never end.
I’m a big fan of ableton on airoplanes, I can get lost in creativity until my legs go numb. By the time my flight was over I had finished two DJ edits and started my RKC B-side for ‘subleties of love’ released in Nov, so a productive journey none the less.

I arrived in Tokyo, felt a little fried but still buzzing at just being there, I met my pal Tomo and hit the trains to Central Koenji, I was pretty tired by then so grabbed some well needed kip in the flat. Tiredness combined with the neon lights made the whole experience seem quite surreal, I was struck at how peaceful the area we were staying in was, traditional music being gently eased out of speakers on every corner! No rushing or hustling, a real sense of serenity.

Post sleep we headed out into town for some Sushi, not a huge fan of sushi but I was starving…

From there we went to a small bar in Shibuya where we spent the night playing electro darts with anyone that would play, the bar asked me to DJ so I had a little tinkle then it was bed time.
My body clock was mangled so no sleep for me that night!

Off we set at 9am for Kyoto by Bullet train, I felt very odd, big jet lag and no sleep starting to hit home, managed to grab an hour or so sleep on the train so felt a little better upon arrival.

I was playing the Nano bar that evening and didn’t know what to expect, we arrived there and it was a real small cosy affair probably about 75 max, the floor area had been halved as there was a group of DJ’s setting up stall, I had a quick sound check and crashed at the hotel. We had planned to go looking at castles but I felt spangled so slept, well kind of, I ended up doing some blog tv stuff.

The show was ace, great crowd and great atmosphere. One thing which struck me about the Japanese crowds and shows are the diversity of acts. I had support acts ranging form heavy metal to electro DJ’s but people seem to be able to get there head round the difference in energy and genre, in the UK it doesn’t work but in Japan the whole eclectric line up works surprisingly well, it’s also quite customary for bands and DJ’s to take ten mins at the end to thank people, not just a quick ‘cheers for coming’ but a real sincere in depth show of gratitude to all who attended.

I was imagining the abuse people would give if I tried that in London, it’d be carnage and heckle central.

Anyway, the show was ace and I had a little DJ jiggle post show, the Japanese Dj’s there were awesome and I felt a little out of my depth but my CDJ magic crept in I think, or perhaps it was the saki, and thus we rolled the night out.
Post show and Dj stuff I was shattered and ready for bed…. so off I set to a club in Kyoto centre.

So not much sleep again and time to train it to Nagoya.

By this time I resembled a slightly greying half figure of a human being and needed rest, but on we marched, fired up by a Japanese curry we located the venue.
Having arrived far too early, the venue was just opening, so Tomo set me up in an internet booth inside a Manga cafe!
I knew it would be a long day when I saw the list of bands playing the party! The interesting thing again was the variety of line up, all sorts of different acts ranging from heavy metal, Can-esque trip hop, Electro sizzle, Ska and then me with a guitar. I was pretty zonkered by the time I played and found sitting through the other acts quite a drain to be honest, far too much for my limited attention span! To my surprise, there were quite a few people watching and they all seemed to enjoy it, it’s quite difficult to gauge in Japan but the reaction was good.

I finished the night with another DJ session to the ecclectric crowd which was quite fun apart from some doughnut asking for punk music, and by punk he didn’t mean 1977 stuff!
We packed down and set about the long drive to Tokyo, Tomo had managed to get a lift with some friends who played the same party so it all seemed like a relatively smooth journey back, or so I thought…

I had a bad feeling about the journey but ignored it and put it down to tiredness and jet lag, I didn’t realise we were about to have a messy road accident.
Most of the 6 passengers were asleep when I awoke to find the driver swaying trying to get his drink, just as he managed to grab it there’s a massive rumble as we hit the hard shoulder and tear two tyres up, the car swerves around all three carriages for a while then comes to a halt at a forty five degree angle in the middle of three lanes. I can’t really express how scared I was as we swung around the motorway but it wasn’t nice!
Then another sense of panic as I see three lanes of traffic heading towards us, lots of swearing in Japanese and with the kinks blearing in the background we slowly tried to get to the other side of the motorway. We sat there for at least 3 mins with cars narrowly missing us until someone let us crawl into the slow lane to inspect the damage.

After a few hours we managed to get some road side assistance and found our way back home, I was pretty shaken and very tired but glad not to be ending my days in japan.

Next stop Tokyo show, I had a great sleep, a good 12 hour stint and then jumped in a cab to the venue, the driver dropped me a few blocks away which didn’t help but I stumbled across it after a bit of wandering. By this time I was well rested so felt well up for the gig, as I entered the venue I met up with loads of ‘twitter’ friends who supplied me with some great gifts and amazing pictures. I felt far more welcome in Tokyo and noticed there were a few brits in the audience.

Again the line up was varied but the show was brill, post show my friend Kink jumped on record playing duties and we sampled the fine saki supplied by another pal Akira.
By the time I started Djing the CDJ’s were jumping all over the place so I handed it over to the DJ’s of the ‘record playing’ variety to finish the night.

Buzzing from the Saki we set off to an aftershow around the corner where another musician friend of mine Hideki Kaji was playing an accoustic set, I met Hideki a few years back when I drummed on some tracks he was recording in London. Hopefully I’ll be touring with him in Japan next Feb, fingers crossed. I played some drums on a song (first time since the shambles thing) felt good, I miss the drums!
One other thing about the ‘live houses’ in japan is that they’re all upstairs for some reason!

A good night in all, the next day was tourist day.

Our first tourist stop was Asakusa temple, it was a little like Camden high St with a temple at the end, loads of tourist shops and I spent far too much money on gifts.
At the end of the shops there was a fortune telling device. Tomo tried it and got one of the ‘worst ones’ according to him, I had a go and picked a blinder.
Basically you put money in a tin, shake a tin and out pops a stick, the stick has a number which corresponds to a drawer, you open the drawer to read the fortune.

We then went for a leisurely stroll around yo yogi park, at the end of the park there was another temple but it was closing down so off we set. Nice day all in all and we managed to avoid the dangerous bees, Tomo informed me they can kill people!

We finished the day visiting some record shops around shibuya, it’s a rare thing to find a place that treats commercial music with the respect it deserves.
A quick stop in our friend Sumire’s shop and then off home to meet some British friends who are in Tokyo teaching English. A nice bit of scran and a chat then bed redying for my flight home. No sleep again but homeward bound, a long journey to the airport but off I flew. Was shattered but managed to start a few other mixes that were in the ‘to do box’.

DJ Adam Ficek

Got home slept and then rushed to Paris, had a ball Djing on a boat with Paul from Maximo, Gary P and the lads from Mogwi. One of my finest sets yet, I managed to beat mix things that shouldn’t ever be beat mixed. Had a good chat to Paul about self releasing his new solo album, it seems everyone faces the same struggles these days.
Finally back home to the littlans first birthday party, was totally gozonkered but had a ball.

The past few weeks have been semi resting period, loads of rehearsing for the RKC tour, preparing for ‘London Guns’ and finishing DJ edits.

Babyshambles

I been reminiscing lots about the Babyshams, recently moved all my music into a small studio space and found some real old demos and sessions brought back some good memories. Shame it went the way it did.

So there you have it.

Things are rebuilding and building, my second RKC album is due out in Nov, I’m getting the promos any day. ‘London Guns’ is about to fly, (more about this soon, it’s a cross between DJ skills and live percussion with a very good friend of mine) I’m getting a heap of Dj bookings, and a few production jobs are creeping in. It’s not all that bad.

PS. Forgot to mention there’s some new vids and more edits hitting adamficek.com very soon, we’re just sorting some technical stuff out then you’ll have em.

PPS. I’m also getting some new stock of ‘Ficek Forever’ tee shirts in, they’ll be on the site over the next few weeks, so as ever cheers for coming and keeping the faith. chin chin.

I’m slowly growing again

with 3 comments

Hi all,

It’s been a while, for the sake of sanity, let me break up my various activities into segments.

Babyshambles…..drum roll,

Where do I start, It’s been a very dark, miserable and upsetting time regarding the band. Something I feel is an intrinsic part of me, has been lost. It’s very difficult to go into detail about the situation – it’s all a bit wobbly but, I’ll do my best when things settle a little, apologies, I know you’re all waiting for the gossip!

I want to thank you all for your support around the issue and I still feel very much a Babyshamble.

RKC

Yes, we’ve now abbreviated, it’s easier to type and uses less ink.

Big thanks to all those who came to St barnabus for the launch of ‘One Born every minute‘ (hope you’ve all bought it)

The single was always due for release around that date, it just so happened that it was the same time as the Babyshamble meltdown, it was a really tough show to play, I wasn’t really on top of it , still suffering from the mishmash of feelings from the recent events. Anyhow it was a nice night. There’s some snaps at http://www.adamficek.com

It was a new thing for me to play with a band of chums, we didn’t get many rehearsals and we lost our trumpet player but like always we put ‘ones head down and soldier on’.

I’m just in the middle of sorting the album release tour for Nov, it’ll be full band again for 10 dates around the UK. Well also be doing instores and radio sessions as we hit the country

There’s also lots of Euro dates and a stint in Japan so get signed up for info, unfortunately I can’t afford to take the band over so it’s me solo. But don’t worry I’ve been learning to play tambourine with my left foot so it’s going to be mega.

DJ stuff

At the moment the Dj side of things is really happening, it’s a tricky game being known as ‘Babyshambles DJ set’ always makes me cringe a bit due to the fact that there’s so many indie dj’s doing the circuit playing the same old list of 30 songs. I’ve been in clubs where it literally is Dj by numbers with no interaction or leading/following the crowd.

Alas, I’m starting to be known for my own skillz now which is groovy. It’s too easy to just burn some obvious songs and cash in on the brand name, hence the start of the ‘Ficek edits‘ thing. I wanted to get more creative with the Dj thing, put my twist on it. Again, they’ll be appearing on my website on a regular basis. I’m just about to upload my ‘We have band crossed with Donna Summer’ = we have love.

The first one I put up was a little funshine between Primal scream and the stones, nothing groundbreaking but it works and gives an overplayed song a freshness – I hope.

I’ve been lucky enough to have a good stint in Ibiza recently, I love it there, especially the Annie Mac night, it seems to be where Indie is going, guitars and songs are great but I think the recent splurge of too many guitar bands, turned people off a little, similar to post britpop etc etc.

It’s an exciting time in the electronic world at the mo, I’m luck y enough to get loads of promos from up and coming bands/artists and there’s some bangers out there. I’m off to italy this week for some Dj stuff so I’m well armed at the moment, artists like Mr Vega, hot Pink Delorean, and the obvious Major Laser is still doing it for me..

So that’s it for now, these will be regular from now on and I’ll hopefully be able to spread some light on the Shim sham situation, in the meantime.

if you wanna help the cause of RKC, my musical stuff in general, you can do the following.

sign up for my mailing list, it gets you free access to demos and edits etc.

or join me on twitter and get involved with retweets and word spreading

or join my facebook page blah blah – if you’re not already.

or join my facebook groups.

DJ

So thanks again for all the goodness, I’m off…

Mercury Awards oh cripes! don’t get me started…

Get ready , for here I come.
